The coronavirus situation in India is worsening with each passing day. The second wave of Pandemic has not only crippled our healthcare system but has created a state of Panic and confusion. Above all fake news on coronavirus is proving to be contagious.
Not to mention those who are monetising on this situation by hoarding oxygen cylinders, medicines and even black-marketing the covid-19 vaccine.
The double mutant virus variant, first identified around March end is currently in circulation. What makes it super scary is that it carries markings of two virus mutations, making it a double mutant.
The double mutant variant has been scientifically named B.1.617, which contains E484Q and L452R mutations.
The tsunami of coronavirus cases, escalating deaths and dwindling medical supplies have started taking a toll on the common man’s strength and will to fight back.
So what should we do in this period of uncertainty?
1. Let’s Follow the basic guidelines issued by the Health Ministry, WHO ( World Health Organization) and local authorities.
2. Let’s Protect ourselves and slow the spread.
• Wear a Mask. ( Preferably double Mask)
Considering COVID-19 can be transmitted through aerosols, it is important that we wear well-fitted masks at crowded places or while talking to someone.
Additionally, double masking is recommended as a means to prevent the spread of the virus. Experts believe that it could provide an extra layer of protection from the virus, leading to lowered risks of infection and transmissibility.
• Stay 6 feet apart. ( An arm’s length)
• Avoid crowds ( follow social distancing)
• Get vaccinated (if elegible)
• Wash hands often.
• Cover cough and sneezes.
• Clean and disinfect.
• Monitor our health daily.
3. Let’s keep our environment safe.
• Avoid spaces that are closed, crowded or involve close contact.
• If required meet people outside in open maintaining the distance, wearing a mask.
• Avoid crowded or indoor settings, but if not possible. Open the windows and wear a mask.
4. Let’s not forget the importance of good hygiene.
• Eliminate germs and viruses by washing hands with soap and water or cleaning them regularly and thoroughly with alcohol based hand rub.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. From there, the virus can enter our body and infect us.
• Surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected regularly, especially those which are regularly touched.
• Be aware of the full range of symptoms of Covid -19. Common symptoms are fever, dry cough, and tiredness. Other symptoms that are less common are loss of taste or smell, aches and pains, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, red eyes, diarrhoea, or a skin rash.
• In case of minor symptoms such as cough, headache and mild fever stay home and self isolate. Call the health care provider or hotline for advice. Have someone bring supplies. If at all need to leave the house or need someone, wear a medical mask to avoid infecting others.
• If there is fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Call by telephone first if possible and follow the directions of the local health authority.
6. What to do if someone is sick in our household?
• Prepare a separate room or isolated space to maintain distance from others.
• Identify one household member with the minimum risk to be the contact person.
• Wear a mask while in contact with the infected person.
• To reduce the contact with the virus use separate dishes, cups utensils, and bedding for the sick person.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
• Very important, take care of the sick person. Monitor his/her symptoms regularly. Pay special attention if the person is at high risk of serious illness. Prescribed pain relievers can ease the symptoms. However do not engage in any medication without the doctor's approval. Ensure the person rests and stays hydrated.
• Call your healthcare provider immediately if you see any of these danger signs:
- Difficulty breathing
- Mental confusion
- Persistent Chest pain
- Loss of speech/ mobility.
- Bluish lips
- Inability to stay awake
7. Last but not the least how to cope with anxiety and stress caused by the effects of this pandemic?
- By taking breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including those on social media. (It’s good to be informed, but hearing about the pandemic constantly can be upsetting.)
- By taking care of our body. ( deep breathing, stretching or meditating. Eating healthy, Excercising regularly and getting lots of sleep.)
- Making time to unwind. ( By doing activities we enjoy.)
- Connecting with others. ( Telling people we trust about our feelings and concerns.)
- Connecting with our community- or faith-based organizations. (While social distancing measures are in place, we can try connecting online, through social media, or by phone or by email.)
